P is for Penguin! & S.T.E.M activities!

Hi everyone! Last week we learned all about.... PENGUINS! We talked about what colors penguins are: black and white! (our color of the month!) We learned that they live in the Arctic where it is very cold and that penguins are birds who can not fly! We read "Penguins love colors", and "Ten little penguins". Some of our friends could even say the word "Penguin!" We recently added the ABC song into our circle time ritual and we pointed out that "P is for Penguin!" Finally, the kiddos enjoyed participating in craft time as we made cute heart shaped penguins and penguins out of cotton balls!

This week, myself and the other two 1-year old teachers did our S.T.E.M projects! For those of you who are unfamiliar with S.T.E.M, it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math! All ECE teachers are required to do a STEM project with your kiddos! Miss Roberta decided to have the children make crosses using popsicle sticks, paint and glue. The children mixed red and blue together to make purple! They then painted the popsicle sticks, and glued them together the next day! Miss Roberta wrote "Jesus Loves Me" and the child's name! Miss Marsha used play dough and noodles to challenge these little ones! Their job was to string different sized noodles on a long skinny noodle! This really helped develop their fine motor skills! Finally, I decided to make Oobleck for my project! Oobleck is described as a non-newtonian fluid, meaning it doesn't take on one form.  It can be looked at as a solid or a liquid depending on how you use it! If you touch it quickly it will appear as a solid, but if you leave your hand in it too long, it will turn into liquid! The kids weren't the only ones who enjoyed it..... take a look at our FUN and BUSY week!
